ARA Rookie Makes Lebanon Pitstop
Article By Rod Rose/The Lebanon Reporter Lebanon — Original Link

Filling the need to drive very, very fast while enjoying with the security of not worrying about a speeding ticket can cost $20,000 or less a year.

Simply join the Advance Racing Association.

Running at O’Reilly Raceway Park, Salem, Winchester and other paved short-track tracks, the ARA is budget auto racing. Only 50-lap features are run; there are no pit crews, although spouses or friends serve as spotters and general unofficial helpers.

Jake Gibson, Indianapolis, the ARA’s 2007 rookie of the year, had his No. 15 car at Faucett & Flame Saturday. Gibson had never driven competitively before last year, he said. “It’s a way to drive fast and not get in trouble,” Gibson told a trio of men who were checking out the vehicle. “It’s like golf; you hit one good shot and you’re hooked for life; you drive five great laps, and you’re hooked.”

The ARA runs limited late models, a pro truck series and 600 series roadsters. There are 25 to 28 limited drivers — a couple of racers share a car — and 15 to 20 racing in the truck series. The investment in an ARA limited late model can be less than $20,000, Gibson said. Several drivers have race-ready cars for sale, costing between $9,000 and $13,000. Gibson’s chassis, from the Canadian version of NASCAR, is about six years old; NASCAR bought the Canadian series several years ago. The body is four or five years old. The “crate” motor is new this year, he said.

His wife is his spotter, Gibson said, although his daughter, Jessica, 13, wants the job. “They told me maybe in a couple of years,” she said. Would Jessica like to race? “Yeh,” she said, eyes sparkling.

Gibson is president of Motorsport Construction, which builds and designs motorsports facilities. A North Montgomery High School graduate, Gibson earned a masters degree in business administration at Purdue University, majoring in building construction and management There are six more races on the schedule, with five at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Claremont. The ARA is produced by Leading Edge Promotions Inc.
